Nokia introduced their first pocket-sized mobile phones in 1992. They became a mass-market product and the new GSM network improved reception everywhere. Nokia made Finnish electronics know-how famous all over the world. By the end of the decade the company was the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Nokia 8110, 1996-98

Nokia 8110 mobile phone had Nokia’s first innovative design. The phone model had a natural, curved shape that fits the side of the face.

The length of the phone could be adjusted, the distance between the earphone and the microphone on the slide cover was adjustable from 10,5 to 17 cm. Nokia 8110 was called “the banana”.

Nokia advertised the phone: “There are no straight lines in nature. Or on a human being. That is why Nokia 8100 is the most ergonomic and comfortable phone in your pocket and next to your face. Nokia 8110 is a miniature sculpture, in your pocket.”

It was small and light, weighting only 151 g. It was possible to send and receive faxes and e-mail with it. Nokia 8100 had a standby time of almost three days. It had a dot matrix screen and 125 memory locations for names and numbers.
